Paying proper attention to your health takes effort, but it doesn’t have to take a lot of time. There are plenty of things you can do in less than 60 seconds to put a zip in your step and a smile on your face.

Follow these tips for quick shots of good health. Their effects will last way beyond a minute.

Keep a journal. When the day’s work is done, take a moment to write down one wonderful thing you noticed that day – whether you drove through a beautiful landscape, witnessed an act of kindness, or fawned over a happy puppy. Getting into the habit of journaling can make you more optimistic. It keeps you on the lookout for positive things. Establishing a platform for positive reflection makes your body more resilient, better able to rebound from depression and better able to cope with stress.

Treat your teeth. If your last few trips to the dentist ended up with you going under the drill, your toothpaste might need an assist. After you brush and floss, use a toothbrush or swab to coat your teeth with a concentrated fluoride treatment gel, and keep it on for a minute. The concentrated fluoride is absorbed by the tooth, helping to strengthen your tooth enamel and prevent further decay. This once-a-day treatment also helps with sensitivity. Your dentist can recommend the right kind of fluoride therapy.

Scrub your feet. Cooped up in shoes and socks all day, your feet are subject to prolonged contact with sweat; that can cause odor and athlete’s foot. Wash your tootsies with soap, making sure to get in between the toes. Use a pumice stone to gently polish away calluses and dead skin cells. Don’t forget to dry your feet thoroughly with a clean towel.

Freshen your face. Make a funny face in the mirror, but use your fingers instead of scrunching up your eyes or doing duck lips. Repeated yawning, clenching your cheeks, or raising your eyebrows loosens the skin without building extra muscle underneath to support it. The breakdown of the skin’s elastic fibers leads to premature sagging and wrinkles. Consider giving yourself a facial massage, using your fingertips to work on your temples, cheeks, and forehead. Facial messaging increases blood flow and helps flush out toxins.

Hug it out. Who doesn’t love a hug? Greet you partner with a bear hug or cuddle with your kid. You’ll both feel good. There’s a health payoff too: A hug can lower your blood pressure and do wonders for your stress level.
